A piece of country life in the city...
Located just south of downtown Dublin in the town of Dundrum, Airfield Estate is a nature lover’s refuge from the smoggy capital. This urban farm offers nearly 40 acres to explore and engage in the outdoors. From a heritage house to a working farm, Airfield offers locals and tourists alike a piece of country life in the city.
History
Although Airfield Estate only opened five years ago, the estate has a much older history. In 1894, Trevor Overend bought the property and moved his family there a couple of years later. He had three children; Letitia, Constance and Naomi. Unfortunately, Constance died of meningitis just before her first birthday.
Letitia and Naomi grew up loving Airfield and learned a great deal from their mother Lily. They took care of many animals on the estate, including the Jersey Herd cows that are still an important part of the farm today.

The Overend sisters never had children and no one inherited their estate when they died. In 1974, Airfield Estate became a charitable organization. About five years ago, Airfield reopened after a going through years of renovations. What stands today is a tourism site that merges heritage with modern food trends.
Today
Visitors can tour the heritage house on the estate, where the Overend family lived. Many of the family’s possessions are on display to give visitors an idea of what life was like at the turn of the 20th century.
Airfield is very proud of their Jersey Herd cattle, which produce dairy products for the restuarant, Overends Kitchen.
Scattered throughout the sprawling gardens are large pastures full of different farm animals, from sheep to the famous Jersey Herd cattle. Depending on the time of year, guests can sometimes spot a turkey or two. Some of the pastures give way to woodland areas full of muddy walking paths and a wild pond.
Much of what is grown on the farm is used at the on-site restaurant called Overends Kitchen. The establishment practices the modern trend of farm-to-table cooking, which they like to call farm-to-fork. They serve a variety of food items, from mince pies to hearty soups.

Visitors can purchase eggs from the farm at the restuarant, Overends Kitchen.
The restaurant offers a variety of food options, including soup with brown bread.
Throughout the day, Airfield offers educational activities such as collecting eggs or feeding the animals. They are open year-round and offer seasonal activities as well, from afternoon tea to visits with Santa at Christmas time.

Getting There
It takes about 40 minutes to get from Dublin to Airfield.
Hop on the GRN Brides Glen Luas rail at any stop downtown and get off at the Balally stop. The travel time is about 30 minutes. Walk five more minutes north to reach the estate.
Pro tip: At the Balally stop, take the stairs and exit through the shopping center.
